Right from the beginning of the play, in the prologue it states the ending of the story.  I think most people already know the basic story of Romeo and Juliet, so I don't think it takes away from the story now, but when this play was first written I think I wouldn't have appreciated the spoiler.

Some themes of this act are the hatred shared between Capulets and Montagues, and arranged marriages.  Juliet's parents want her to marry Paris, but she doesn't love him.  At the party she meets Romeo and falls in love with him even though she later learns that he is a Montague, and her family hates his family.  The point where they meet and they don't know that they are enemies and the readers do is irony.
